Explore historical and cultural legacies of Cuba’s experience of the Cold War. Visit key Havana sites, hear from local scholars of literature and the arts, and meet with a historian at the Bay of Pigs. Students will also be introduced to evidence of Soviet influence in Cuba, especially in architecture and popular culture.
**This program is being conducted under a General License for Educational Activities (31 CFR 515.565) under the Cuban Assets Control Regulations and is compliant with all rules of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
Location DescriptionHavana, Cuba, with day trip to Matanzas province.
While licensed travel to Cuba has become easier in recent years, there are still no direct banking connections between Cuba and the United States. Students are advised to bring any cash they may need for personal expenses not included in the program cost (see below). For advice on attire and what to bring, please consult the faculty directors.
HousingStudents will stay in private homes (casas particulares) licensed to rent rooms to guests. Rooms include en suite bathrooms and will be either double (with two beds, for students of the same sex) or single, depending on availability.

CostThe cost of the program is $2,044.82. This includes airfare, visa, lodging, ground transportation, guide fees, and all meals.
The program fee does NOT include FIU course instructional fees (455.64 per graduate credit), the $175 non-refundable FIU Study Abroad fee, or additional personal expenses.
*IMPORTANT NOTE: FIU students born in Cuba are required by the Cuban government to enter and depart Cuba with a valid Cuban passport, regardless if they are U.S. citizens. It is those students’ responsibility to make sure their documentation is in order. This process can require considerable time and additional costs. Contact the faculty directors for consultation about your particular case.
*FIU’s Cuban Research Institute is making three $500 scholarships available for participation in this program to students of Cuban and Cuban-American descent. Contact faculty directors for information.
