Program Description

The FIU Interior Architecture Department offers the only formal educational initiative in the U.S. focused on designing  cruise ship and yacht interiors. It is a unique curriculum that prepares designers for the specific issues associated with working in the cruise ship and yacht industry. Entrance into the CSSY program is limited to students entering the second year of the Master of Interior Architecture curriculum who have earned a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the graduate program. You must apply to the department and be accepted for the program to participate in this study abroad.
The Spring semester of the CSSY program consists of 3 distinct parts.
1. A two weeks in Miami: the first week is an Intensive Workshop with Italian Yacht Designers and the second week is a collaboration hosting Italian Naval Design students  and doing a Cruise Ship Project.
2. A one week collaboration studio with the University of Genoa I Naval Design Program in La Spezia, Italy. Students work on teams and design a specific program for an Italian Yacht. During this week there are hotel accommodations.
3. Seven weeks in Genoa, Italy. The students will share apartments and have studio space and classes at Santa Maria di Castello. There will be various studio/instructional activities: lectures, workshops, field trips, and critique; and then days of travel where students will experience and learn about design, history, and culture int eh major Italian cities. There will also be a trip to a shipyard to experience the construction of a large naval vessel; and a trip to Switzerland to experience design and architecture.
